day to night

Bonjour. Check it out, friends. Work day to date night.

Board room ready with a blazer, no nonsense bun and scarf for when your office is freezing even though its 100 degrees outside.
Blazer off. Scarf turned belt. Hair down. DONE. You are ready to impress the lucky man or lady ready to sweep you off your feet.

Another reason I like this look? I get to wear orange, the color of this summer I can't get enough of.

Up next week: Vacation times! My own mid-Missouri vacation and recap of my gorgeous friends who went on vacation to visit me. You'll see.

day and night, holiday remix

Memorial Day. That glorious day that proves summer is here. Or, in my world, the day every desperately needs off before they go crazy in the office and send one too many too-snarky emails. It's time to bring out your whites, your barbecues, your booze, and your very stylish friends.

And here is my very stylish friend!

Everyone, meet Jedd. He's on twitter, dontcha know. And he works for Politico and he's as fashionable as he is funny, and you don't meet too many of those.

Here he is traveling for the weekend in perfect casual cool:

And, in Jedd's own words: Rae Rae, we were thinking of you in Youngstown, Pa. You've started a movement! With a change of belt and shoe, and added shirt, we went from traveling casual chic to bright and white Memorial Day ready.

I'm loving those whites. And the sexiness underneath. I mean, what? Ahem.

Memorial Day awesomeness, guys. How did you stay summer chic from day to night? And from traveling to partying?

(A shout out also goes to my friend Mike, who suggested a dip into menswear. There will be more to come.)

top knot times

I've long admired the huge, giant, did I mention large buns I've seen on the heads of many a girl on many a runway and in only the chicest real-life settings. That girl must have thick, beautiful, long hair, I'd think. Turns out, there are some tricks to make even the finest of strands poof out with the best of them in top knot glory.

I learned from @bergdorfs, who did a great tutorial on twitter the other day. You can see the recap on the Bergdorfs blog.

Here's the end result. I'm in love with this hairstyle. It's easy, classic, huge and pretty.

Holy top knot! Thanks, @<span class=

Here's the secret:

A sponge! Get a round sponge with a hole in the middle. Or, if you are like me, get a round sponge and cut a hole in the middle. Pull your pony tail through and wrap the hair around the sponge. Pin into place. You are done. Welcome to the world of big hair.

day and night

Today is all about adding the fun.

Here I am at work. In boring classic black.

But now its time to go out. What do you do?! Well, I think, shorts are fun.
See! Look how happy I am and how wrinkled fun my shorts are. But...what if I could add more fun?
Ribbons are fun! So is orange! And clutches are fun, too!
But neon! Neon is the most fun. Trust me.

(Add as much or as little fun as you like.)

day and night

Today was some real time day and night.

Check out my office outfit:
and my fun outfit:
Ok, this was basically the same idea as last week, so I might do another, more legit day and night later on. I mostly want you to focus on how awesome that clutch is. Because its awesome.

lessons today:
  • Accessories rule.
  • As always, layer up.
  • A bun during the day = soft waves at night.
Happy happy-houring!

List, list, listing

It's May! It's May! OK, it's been May for a week now (happy Mother's Day, everyone).

Regardless, I promised a list of goals for May projects by the end of the week, sooooooo:
  • Shoes, shoes, shoes. Or rather, one pair of shoes, the modified awesome I had in mind last month and didn't get to. It involves spray paint and is inspired by PS. I Made This' trench coat project. You'll see what I mean.
  • Handwarmers. Remember the handwarmers I started a billion years ago? No? Well, this month I'd like to finish them. Even though it probably won't be cold enough to wear them for several more months. Oops.
  • Dress. Also, finish the dress I started last month.
  • Buy this book. Do one project from this book.
So, looks like May is dedicated to finishing things.

P.S. - This is going on my list just yet, but LOOK HOW CUTE THESE ARE

day and night

Been a busy week at work. And it's only Wednesday. Quick! To the bathroom to change in five minutes before you head uptown for a much needed drink.

See what I did here? It's all about a good base layer. Black skinny work pants from the Gap can take you from the office to the party without having to bat a cat-eye-lined eye.

At the office:
  • Cover up. Wear that cardigan and work it.
  • Lower heels. Still cute, and brought some color, but not quite as sky high as my after-work shoes.
  • Low pony. Mostly out of necessity to get my hair out of my face.
At happy hour:
  • Show some skin (just a little). I have a black tube top on top of my black pants to fake out a jumpsuit. I replaced my cardigan with my kick-of-neon sweater vest for a little fun, but you could just as easily go bare shoulders here, obvs.
  • Party shoes. I replaced my shoes with some that are a little sparkly, a little teal and a lot high.
  • Hair. High pony. High impact.
  • Make up. I did some cat eye liner and reapplied mascara. I also threw on a little Laura Mercier matte serum to take out the shine without caking on more make up.
Voila. Go enjoy the party. You've earned it.

April goals

list updaaaate.

Ok. Its May now. My time is up for my ongoing list of goals for April. Let's tally the list:

  • Make a black and gray dress: still half way through this. (+50 points)
  • knit a neon yellow vest: FINISHED (+100)
“Hey, where’d you get that?” “Oh, I made it.”
  • enter my apartment in the apartment therapy small cool spaces contest: FINISHED! (+200 because this was really hard. I painted and ish.)
  • Louboutin-up a pair of shoes a la spikes and spray paint: Still on hold, due to lack of funds and time for shoe shopping (-100)
TOTAL: 250

Not bad. I should have finished that dress this past weekend but, well, I got tired, you guys. Instead of dress sewing, I had to stay up all night undoing a knot in the yarn to finish the vest (not kidding. I've never seen a knot that big. I would have taken a picture except that it was much too embarrassing and I couldn't get my fingers untangled long enough to pick up a camera.)

I'm pretty excited about the things I did accomplish. My apartment looks great. I have a sweet neon addition to any outfit. I also did some cool things not on the list like

ate brownies.

got my nails painted a really awesome color.

read some books.

Happy end of April to all of you. I'll post a May goals list by the end of the week.
